Step 2: Fold the Cable in Half
Bend the needle in half at that midpoint so the two needle tips point in the same direction, side by side. Take a moment here to check that your stitches aren't twisted around the cable before you go any further — it's much easier to fix now than after a few rounds.
Step 3: Pull Out the Loop
Reach into the middle of your stitches, right at the fold, and pull a loop of the cable out from between two stitches. The fix that works best is simple: give the first stitch of each new needle a firm, deliberate tug after you knit it, snugging it up against the stitch before it rather than leaving it loose. Do this every single time you start a new needle, on both transition points, for the first several rounds especially — that's when the fabric is most vulnerable to visible gaps.
