# How to Felt Knitting: A Fulling Guide

If you've read our companion article on protecting hand-knits from accidental felting, you already know that hot water and agitation can turn a beautifully fitted sweater into a piece of doll clothing. But that same transformation, done on purpose, is one of the most satisfying techniques in a knitter's toolkit. Deliberate felting — often called fulling — takes loose, open knitted fabric and turns it into something dense, sturdy, and almost indestructible. It's how knitters make bags that hold their shape without a single stitch of interfacing, slippers that don't stretch out of shape, and baskets that stand up on their own.

This guide walks you through the process from yarn selection to final shaping, so you can felt with confidence instead of crossing your fingers.

What Felting Actually Does to Your Fabric

Wool fiber is covered in microscopic scales, similar to shingles on a roof. In a finished knitted fabric, those scales are more or less flat and undisturbed. When you introduce heat, moisture, soap, and friction all at once, the scales lift open and start to catch on each other. As you agitate the fabric, the fibers migrate and lock together, and the whole piece shrinks and thickens. The individual stitches you knitted disappear into a solid, matted textile. That's felting — and in a project you knit specifically to be felted, it's the whole point.

This only works with the right fiber. You need a yarn that's at least mostly wool or another animal fiber, and it has to be untreated. Superwash yarns are coated or chemically stripped at the mill specifically so the scales can't catch on each other, which is exactly what makes them machine-washable in the first place. That treatment is permanent, so no amount of hot water and scrubbing will felt a superwash yarn. Save those skeins for projects that need to survive the laundry, and reach for a plain, non-superwash wool, alpaca, or wool blend when felting is the goal.

Step 1: Knit Big, Loose, and Simple

Because felting shrinks and densifies fabric, your knitted piece needs to start out noticeably larger and looser than you want the finished item to be. Depending on the yarn and how far you felt it, pieces commonly shrink by 20 to 40 percent in both directions, though stockinette often pulls in more along its length than its width. Patterns written specifically for felting already build this oversizing into their instructions and gauge, so it's worth using a tested felted pattern rather than guessing at the math yourself the first time.

A few knitting choices make felting go more smoothly:

  • Use a larger needle than you normally would for the yarn weight, so the fabric stays loose and open enough for fibers to move and interlock.
  • Stick with simple stitch patterns. Plain stockinette or garter felts evenly; heavily cabled or lace patterns can lose their definition entirely once the fibers mat together.
  • Weave in ends generously rather than leaving long tails, since loose ends can felt into odd little tufts.

Step 2: Swatch and Test First

This is the step it's tempting to skip, and the one you shouldn't. Felting is not reliably reversible — once fibers have locked together, you can't full-size the fabric back out or unfelt it if you go too far. Before committing hours of knitting to a bag or a pair of slippers, knit a swatch in your actual yarn, measure it precisely, and run it through the felting process you're planning to use. Measure it again afterward. That before-and-after comparison tells you roughly how much shrinkage to expect from your specific yarn, water temperature, and machine, so you can size your real pattern with some confidence instead of hoping for the best.

Step 3: Choose Your Felting Method

Hand Felting

For small items or when you want maximum control, felt by hand in a sink or basin. Fill it with hot water and a small amount of mild soap, submerge the piece, and plunge and squeeze it repeatedly — pushing it underwater, lifting it out, and pressing it against the sides of the basin. The friction and temperature change (a plunge into cold water partway through can help) encourage the fibers to catch. This method takes real physical effort and patience, but it lets you check the fabric constantly and stop the instant it reaches the size and density you want.

Machine Felting

A top-loading washing machine with an agitator does the same job faster, using the same combination of hot water, soap, and mechanical action. Set the machine to a hot wash with the lowest water level that will still cover your piece, add a small amount of laundry or dish soap, and run it through the wash cycle. Many knitters add an old towel or a pair of jeans to the load, since the extra fabric adds friction that speeds up felting. Because felted items shed fiber into the water, place the piece inside a mesh laundry bag or zippered pillowcase to protect your machine.

Front-loading and high-efficiency machines without a full agitation cycle generally don't felt wool well, since they rely on tumbling rather than the vigorous back-and-forth motion that drives the felting process.

Step 4: Check In Constantly

Whichever method you use, don't walk away and let a full cycle run unattended the first time. Stop the machine or pause your hand-plunging every few minutes and pull the piece out to check its size and texture. You're looking for the individual stitches to blur together into a smooth, dense surface with no visible gaps. Once you like what you see, stop immediately — rinse in cool water to help set the fibers, and skip any spin or extended rinse cycle that would keep agitating the piece. Because felting can't be undone, it's always better to stop a little early and run a short second round than to overshoot and end up with fabric that's shrunk more than you intended.

Step 5: Shape and Dry

Fresh out of the water, felted fabric is heavy, wet, and pliable — this is your window to shape it. For flat pieces, roll them in a towel to squeeze out excess water, then lay them flat and pin or block them to the exact dimensions you want. For three-dimensional shapes like bags or baskets, stuff the piece with plastic bags, towels, or a form to hold its shape while it dries, since felted wool will happily dry into whatever shape it's left in. Drying can take a day or two depending on thickness and humidity, so find a spot with good airflow and be patient before you handle the piece too much.

What to Make With Felted Knits

Felted fabric's density and structure make it especially well suited to projects that need to hold their own shape without a lining or stiff interfacing: sturdy tote bags and purses, slippers that resist stretching out with wear, and baskets or bowls that stand upright on a shelf. Because the finished fabric is thick and wind-resistant, it also shows up often in mittens, hats, and outerwear accents where warmth and durability matter more than stitch definition.

Felting turns knitting's usual rules upside down — you're knitting for a shape and size the fabric won't have until after it leaves the needles. Swatch first, watch closely, and you'll end up with some of the toughest, most satisfying pieces in your knitting basket.
