Most eyelets are created by pairing an added loop with a decrease so the stitch count remains balanced. The resulting opening becomes more or less visible according to yarn thickness, fibre halo, and blocking.
A small swatch lets you see the rhythm of the openings before committing to a garment. Try a gentle wash and lay it flat to dry so you can judge the finished fabric rather than the fabric fresh from the needles.
