A first garment can be a steady learning project when you choose a shape with clear measurements, a yarn you enjoy handling, and a construction that suits your attention span.
Begin with the finished measurements rather than the label size. Compare them with a favourite garment and decide how much ease feels comfortable for the project. Then make a swatch, wash it as you plan to wash the garment, and measure it after it dries.
When the instructions introduce a new technique, give yourself permission to practise it separately. The goal is not to make a perfect first garment; it is to make a garment that teaches you how your knitting behaves.
